Benefits of Ketamine IV Therapy for Depression & Anxiety

1. Can help reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety

In a study published in 2022, ketamine IV therapy has been observed to improve symptoms of anxiety, depression, and suicidal ideation. The study was done from 2017 until 2021 and involved 424 patients with treatment-resistant depression. Fifty percent of the participants experienced remarkable reduction in their self-harm and suicidal ideation within only 6 weeks of the study and 30 percent of participants experienced general anxiety and depressive symptoms after 10 ketamine infusions.

Another study published in 2023 observed similar effects on their participants’ general anxiety disorder and depression symptoms. But, unlike the former study, this one involved a control group that went through the standard antidepressant therapy. The study observed a more significant reduction in the symptoms of those who underwent the ketamine IV therapy.

2. Helps improve mood regulation within hours

A significant number of patients with depression that went through ketamine IV treatment experienced improvement of their symptoms in a matter of hours. This effect is what has piqued the interest of medical practitioners and researchers, creating a rush to  learn about the treatment’s effect on depression and anxiety. A leading theory for this is that ketamine stimulates the growth of connection between nerve cells in the brain responsible for mood regulation. This addresses those with absent or very few of these connections, which is believed to be one of the possible causes for long-term depression.

This effect was observed by a 2019 study on the effect of ketamine treatment on animal test subjects. The behavior of the test subjects suggests that they experienced improvement in their symptoms of depression and the growth of these synapses has been confirmed later on. Although the study has only been done on mice, this shows promise in improving depression caused by the lack or degradation of these neuron connections.

3. Helps Regulate Increased Emotional Reactivity

The amygdala is the small structure in the brain responsible for processing emotions. It helps with regulation of memories and links the emotions experienced to one’s memories and senses. For those with PTSD, depression, and anxiety, their amygdala is not regulating the emotions experienced enough and undergo overactivity when remembering specific memories or experiencing their trauma or anxiety triggers.

Ketamine infusions can help those with anxiety, depression, and PTSD reduce their amygdala’s reactivity to emotional stimuli. This effect only reduces the reaction to negative stimuli – not to positive or neutral ones. Because of this, it can help restore a healthy response towards their negatively-associated memories, triggers, and sensory experiences.

4. Can help relieve symptoms of treatment-resistant depression

Antidepressants and psychotherapy are the standard treatments for those with depression. But, there are cases when these standard methods are not enough, as the symptoms don’t improve or come back after a short time of improvement. This is referred to as treatment-resistant depression and those with it are more likely to have more severe symptoms and longer depressive episodes.

This is where ketamine IV therapy caught the attention of the medical world. In a study, patients with major depressive disorder that went through ketamine IV therapy experienced remarkable improvements despite standard methods for treatment not working (even with electroconvulsive therapy). This gives those with major depressive disorder a great alternative, given the suffering they experience from their health condition.

5. Can improve response to standard treatment for anxiety and depression

Ketamine infusion therapy can stimulate the growth of connection between nerve cells responsible for mood regulation in the brain. This is the current explanation as to why standard medication for depression is working after treatment with ketamine despite not having the desired effect before it. Because of this, patients with depression, anxiety, and PTSD do not have to be dependent on ketamine infusion therapy and can experience relief and improvement from their symptoms through standard medication and psychotherapy.

6. Does not cause major side effects

Like any medical treatment, ketamine IV therapy can cause some side effects. But, the side effects that patients typically experience are minor. The most characteristic of these include loopiness, headache, high blood pressure, nausea, and vomiting that go away after a few hours after receiving medication.

Of course, like any medication, you must first consult a medical professional before undergoing ketamine infusion for treating your depression or anxiety.

How Ketamine Treatment Works

Ketamine infusion can only be received in a doctor’s office or clinic by patients diagnosed with treatment-resistant depression, PTSD, or anxiety. The treatment plan will vary and be specific to each individual, but ketamine infusions are usually done twice per week for three weeks, then once per week for the next one to three weeks. This initial treatment usually only lasts for a total of 6 weeks and is followed by a single ketamine IV infusion every two to four weeks.
Each session of ketamine infusion therapy lasts for about 40 minutes. The dissociative experience immediately takes effect and wears off about 15 to 20 minutes after the IV drip ends. A doctor has to be on-site during the therapy to answer any questions the patients might have or to provide the care they require.

Testimonials

I’ve been dealing with depression and complex post-traumatic stress disorder since I was about 11. It is treatment-resistant. I have not been able to find anything except this that has done anything for it…This was a last-ditch effort to find something that might make any sort of difference and improve my quality of life in any sort of way and it genuinely has given me back a kind of life that I didn’t even know I was capable of having.

Alissa Goligoski, 24

I have been dealing with depression for 15 years and just really bad anxiety goes with that PTSD stuff and nightmares every night for years. I’ve tried a lot of different therapies and prescriptions. But, nothing else actually helped me this much, or actually even really helped. After finishing all six treatments, I’ve noticed a lot of good changes. I don’t have any suicidal thoughts anymore and I’m not getting down on myself about little things.
